张果老是中国古代神话传说八仙之一，在中国民间有广泛影响。

张果老（张果），他姓张名果，号通玄先生，受武则天和玄宗征召，御赐邢州五峰山（今邢台张果老山）。

据明万历《太原府志》记载，张果老者，字园林，交城（东关）小南巷人也。尝骑白驴至（交城）阿苏山，以铁锥指石为穴，引驴入焉，今岩中驴尚存。是唐朝（618-907年）人，本名张果，由于他年纪很大，所以人们在他的名字上加一个"老"字，表示对他的尊敬。相传他久隐山西中条山。往来晋（阳）汾（州）间。唐武则天时已数百岁。则天曾遣使，欲召见之，即佯死。后人复见其居恒州山中。他常倒骑白驴，日行数万里。休息时即将驴折叠，藏于巾箱。曾被唐玄宗召至京师，演出种种法术，授以银青光禄大夫，赐号通玄先生。以后他以“年老多病”为由，又回到中条山去。因为他经常手中拿着竹子做的一种说唱用具，所以后世人们就把他看作是"道情"（中国的一种传统说唱艺术）的祖师，相传于北宋时期聚仙会时应铁拐李之邀在石笋山列入八仙。
